Well. . .I always thought being a feminist means you don't think women should be treated like doormats. I feel like anyone who has a heart and common sense would HAVE to be a feminist.

Hello,

If a male shouldn't be a feminist, nor an anti-feminist, what in the world should he be? Nothing? Is it a Catch-22? I know Gloria Steinem has said that sexism affects men, too. Imagine being given a speech from the Bible by your wife-beating stepfather about "what it means to be a man" because you were just too "effeminate" as a boy. So I think the aim of feminism is at least partly to liberate men from all the stupid sex roles that they are expected to play, too. Feminism is the promotion of sex equality by emphasizing the rights of women, who have traditionally had fewer; you don't have to experience life as a woman to believe that women are equal with men, or that men have a vested interest in equality too.

not really agree...
the difference between the fake and the truth male feminist is quite easy to do
some heterosexual really doesn't care about sex (except very special situation)
for example my problem is to accept that a woman wants (sometimes) something else than an another friend (yes i agree that's fucking strange)
sincerely i think it's possible (and i don't say that beacause i want to catch some girls) it's quite hard to have normal relationship between the sex, sometimes i pretend to be gay during the vacation because some girls are completely obsses to be objectified .... but i understand that too, my girlfriend is constantely baited and if i where in her position i could shot a dozen of pigs
PS : j'espere que ce que j'ai écrit en anglais veut dire quelque chose, ou du moins, est compréhensible, sorry for the slaughtered english
PS2 : i'm aware (?) of the poverty of my english speech which will get me for a complete badger (stupid national language which is speaked by nobody) but a sincere salutation from a french friend (i dont know how to say "camarade")

Stumbled across this searching for prominent male 'feminists'.

Thanks d_laura for speaking soberly on the topic. I am a secular humanist, which encompasses many of the principles of feminism, or any belief system concerned with equality.

It sounds like the man you met is a little confused and is perhaps trying too hard to compensate for the predicament he finds himself in. I expect he will mature with age.

However to suggest that a man cannot identify himself as a feminist is divisive and anti-progressive. Sexism affects men greatly, and while men should not claim victim status it is imperative that they too heed the call to challenge this societal disease.

Good day!

i know, i sound like a wanker, but i am interested to know why there are many women who reject feminism even if they believe in its basic tenets

I think what I really am is a closet feminist. Part of the reason why I have mixed feelings about feminism is because I don't like most women to begin with. I don't like how women relate to each other, I don't like their stereotypically female traits - hell, I have a lot of issues about my stereotypically female traits. On the other hand, the inequality among genders leaves a bad taste in my mouth and enrages me, especially because I've been through quite a bit of sexual harassment myself. I think what I need to do is to read up more on the subject...maybe that will clear up the ambiguity.

p.s. i reject the premise that males can't be feminist. the essence of feminism is an equality between the sexes. this is an ideal both sexes can definitely prescribe to. though more radical, more extreme manifestations of this movement may alienate possible adherents to this ideology/philosophy/social/political theory (both male and female), it should not only concern women, because women's issues should be a social issue, regardless of sex, gender, or sexuality.

feminism is far too complex (and full of hybrid theories) to be characterised by myths such as bra burning. i am feminist, but i am also a social democrat, believe that certain systems should be a meritocracy--i am many things, and i believe in many things. i agree with the other comment, i think you are a feminist too. i know, i sound like a wanker, but i am interested to know why there are many women who reject feminism even if they believe in its basic tenets; or why men can't be feminist. but it does sound like his 'feminism' was really just a way to "bullshit [his] way in to [your] heart." :)
