Borderline Virgins
Posted by Lauren | Under Songwriting Efforts with 158 views Sunday Dec 3, 2006When I was 15, I had dreams of forming an all-girl rock band but didn’t have the nerve or talent to actually go through with it. Sure, I had a guitar and guitar lessons but I chouldn’t string two chords together to save my life and the thought of actually having to play an instrument in front of people really, really frightened me.
Fast forward five years later. The last few months have been spent getting my heart and ego pretty much stamped on, and what better way is there to release anger and angst than through music? In October I discovered that I could actually write songs and play the guitar, and around that time my friends and I conceptualized a punk/grunge/goth/rock band called Borderline Virgins. At first we were just going to do Hole covers, but then we started writing our own songs and as of this update we already wrote around 8 or 9. But only one of those songs have actually been arranged and polished, haha.
After spending weeks writing our songs, learning our instruments, and practicing on acoustic guitars, we finally got around to pooling our resources to rent out a studio to rehearse last Saturday. We could only stay for two hours since some stupid high school ditzes had the place reserved after ours, but the limited time definitely made us work faster and harder.
We’re taking it slow and polishing off one song at a time, so only one song was rehearsed that day. Although we were a little rusty at first, and I couldn’t sing while playing the guitar at the same time, we definitely improved by the time the high school brats finally kicked us out of the room.
The band was supposed to have another rehearsal on Friday but the threat of the coming supertyphoon–which didn’t even show up–forced us to cancel. Now we’re trying to see if we can get everyone together on Tuesday evening.
I wish we could have rehearsals all day, everyday. This is the happiest and most excited I’ve been about something in a long time. A lot of really shitty things have happened to me this year but if it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t have discovered that I could play guitar, that I could write songs, and that I could be in a band with my friends. I think Borderline Virgins will definitely go far, and I’m not just saying that because it’s our band. In a country where the shitty music of Hale and Cueshe is called “rock” and worshipped by millions of morons, it’s time people with intelligent lyrics stepped up and showed everyone what real rock music sounds like. And I think we can do that. Maybe I’m getting ahead of myself, or maybe I’m being a little too arrogant just because our first rehearsal went well. I don’t know. But we’re going to get somewhere with this, and I intend to be dedicated to this band until we get the success we deserve.
I can imagine myself a year this time a year from now, leaving my shitty day job to go to rehearsals so I can bitch about how much I hate the corporate world to my friends and I can scream out my frustrations about asshole men in the microphone. We’re far from ready to start playing gigs, but the plan is to start being out there in the local music scene by next summer.
Pictures of our rehearsal here.
Add us on MySpace! We haven’t uploaded songs yet but we will soon.
yeah, rock on ladies! Cool! I like some grunge and goth. Also like medieval sounding music. Old synthesizers, prog and weird space rock, too. Basically, my best song is an instrumental with two or three words thrown in as a special effect.
wow. cool band name. good looking ladies playing goth and grunge? woowah! can hardly wait to hear your demo songs
btw, if you’re base guitarist is interested in buying my ibanez gio bass axe. just let me know. slightly used, definitely, in good shape….
